Today’s Reading: 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from every brother who walks irresponsibly and not according to the tradition received from us.

2 Thessalonians 3:6

Reflection

A life of faith is a life of work within the Family of God. We are designed not to simply receive from God, but to serve Him. He has already given all of Himself for our sake without us earning any of it. We have already received Salvation, the fullness of Eternity of Him by His Son Jesus. We have already been freely given His Joy, Peace, and Love. By God’s Providence, we have also been blessed with our daily needs in abundance. But we have not only been given hearts and minds and stomachs to be filled by His Goodness. We have also been given hands and feet.

This is why Paul says to be wary of brothers (and sisters) who walk irresponsibly, who do not toil for Christ but only seek to receive the benefits of God’s Family. These people are not living in true relationship with God and His people. Paul says to warn them as siblings, and exhorts the Thessalonians to not grow wary in doing the good work of Christ. His statement about others prompts us to look at ourselves as we live within the Family of God. Are we toiling for His purpose? How are we using our hands and feet to do His work?

Prayer

Everlasting God, Good Father, thank You for relationship with You. Thank You for Your Family into which You have so graciously welcomed me. Thank You for the opportunity You give to serve You and work alongside Your people for Your Glory. You are so good. Please show me how to best live as Your child. Teach me how to serve You. Train my ears and eyes to listen and watch for Your leading. Move my heart to follow diligently after Your leadership. I thank You for Your guidance Lord, and pray all of these things in the Name of Your Son Jesus, my Savior, AMEN.
