We know that the LORD delights in us because of the Salvation He has achieved for our sake. King David is assured of God’s favor upon him because though his enemies surround him, though people conspire against him, though they have betrayed him, they are not stronger than the LORD’s rescue. David rejoices over this great saving grace, which points to the much greater rescue that has God has done for our souls through Jesus Christ.
The eternal Salvation that God has granted keeps the enemy from reveling in triumph over us. Though Satan prowls around like a lion, waiting to devour vulnerable souls, the LORD has shown His great love in the way He has preserved us as His children. While King David remembers that God has saved his life on earth, we rejoice that the LORD has saved us beyond the temporal. So much more profound is this rescue that God has orchestrated through Jesus. Although we are rightly accused of wrongdoing, we are spared from death. Although we are the ones who have conspired and spoken deceitfully, have even betrayed our Rescuer, by Christ our sins have been forgiven. Surely the LORD must delight in us His people, for His Salvation upon us is unmerited and undeserved. Should you ever wonder how God feels toward you, remember what He had sent His Son to do on your behalf. Through the Work of Jesus, we as God’s people have the most blessed assurance that the LORD delights over us, that He loves us, and that He is ours forever. “O Death, where is your victory? O Death, where is your sting?” The LORD delights in us, and has displayed this through Jesus. Let us trust in Him.
