Today’s Reading: Psalm 64

God, hear my voice when I complain. Protect my life from the terror of the enemy.

Psalm 64:9

Reflection: When all we can do is pray, we are able to do the best thing possible. For no one who is able to cry out to the LORD is helpless, no matter the situation. God makes Himself known to all who truly seek Him. The psalmist asks for refuge from the terror of evildoers who destroy innocent people with their wicked words and plot traps to catch unsuspecting victims. They scheme and they plot evil things. And the psalmist is powerless against them. But where the psalmist is powerless, the LORD is powerful. God answers his prayer, granting protection and safety. Moreover, He responds with His righteous destruction of evil. All plans that the wicked try to execute turn against them. All attempts at destruction lead to their own ruin.

God’s protection upon His people is not a secret. In the Exodus of Hebrew slaves from the land of Egypt, God’s rescue is made evident to all who witness His great works, both slaves and Pharoah. It is shown to His beloved and to their enemies in a way that makes all understand that He can and will do great things. Those who seek God’s help receive it and rejoice in His works. But the evil are wounded and made to stumble. They are not utterly destroyed instantly. Even they are shown God’s power so that they might leave their evil ways and seek Him.

Prayer: Loving and Everlasting God, You are strong and mighty, my Refuge and Strength, my Help in times of trouble. Although I am weak, in You I am made strong. You bring Your protection and safety upon me and are faithful to provide it always. Thank You for all that You do for me, LORD. Please teach me to live confidently in the faith You continue to grow within me. Please show me how to depend on You and cling to You in all situations. I pray all of these things in Jesus’ Name, AMEN.
