Today’s Reading: Psalm 51
Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithful love; according to Your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion.
Reflection: The LORD God forgives us of our sins because of His faithful love. He washes away guilt because of His compassion upon His people. God would be just in punishing us for all that we have done against Him, for we have indeed done evil in the LORD’s sight. We have not only inherited sinful nature but also freely expressed it in our own lives. Our actions have established us as sinners in the sight of the Good King. Consequently, we deserve to be destroyed along with our sin. But praise God that He is not only righteous and just, but also loving and gracious. Because He loved us, He saved us from our sin. He redeemed us from unrighteousness. In order to save us, the LORD did not simply look away from our sinfulness, or ignore the guilt of what wrong we had done against Him. Instead, He bore the punishment of sin that we deserved. The guilt and shame we earned did not just disappear from the LORD’s sight after we committed shameful acts. No, It was all placed upon the LORD’s perfect and righteous Son that we would be saved.
Remember the LORD’s loving sacrifice of Jesus when You recall having your sins taken away. Each wrongful act has been paid for by Jesus. He has cleansed our sin from us not begrudgingly, but eagerly. He purifies us willingly because He longs for us to be as white as snow. God teaches His people His wisdom because He desires that they are filled with the joy of the knowledge of His Salvation. The LORD has saved us because of His perfect love alone.
Prayer: LORD, You are faithful. You are righteous and just, and loving and merciful. Thank You for saving me because of Your love for me, and not leaving me to try and earn salvation for myself. Thank You for not only knowing what is best for me but also for providing it. You are so good, Loving God. I pray that You help me to live in constant thankfulness to You. Help me to remember that when You took my sin away, You placed it on Your Son for my sake. Help me to be reminded of Jesus’ Sacrifice, that I would not live for myself, but for You. I pray all this in Jesus’ wonderful Name, AMEN.
