Today’s Reading: Psalm 132

“This is my resting place for ever and ever;
    here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it.”

Psalm 132:14

Reflection:

Psalm 132 recalls David’s earnest desire to establish a temple for the LORD in Jerusalem, that the LORD would have the honor due His name. David had vowed that he would not rest until he found a place where God’s temple could be built, for God had done so much for Israel and David was moved within himself to do something to lift up the name of the LORD in the Promised Land.

Yet, David is gently reminded that God will dwell in the Promised Land and will reign there not because of David’s efforts, but because God desires it. And not only that, God promises David that his family line will be established forever, a clear prophecy pointing to Jesus of Nazareth, descendant of David, and God in human flesh. Certainly, David had genuine desires to glorify God. Yet, it is God’s desires that are to be sought, and His desires will be accomplished because He is God.

There may be wonderful things that we want to do for the LORD because we realize just how wonderful He has been to us. Psalm 132 reminds us to seek what God desires from us and to also entrust God to accomplish it for us, in us, and through us that He may receive the glory and that we may experience the glory of God in our lives.

Prayer: Gracious God, I cannot thank You enough for all You have done for me. I want to serve You and to give You thanks. Please show me the way to do so. Help me to do what You desire, that You may receive the glory in what I do. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN.
