Today’s Reading: Job 9:1-10

If one wanted to take Him to court, he could not answer God once in a thousand [times]. God is wise and all-powerful. Who has opposed Him and come out unharmed?

Job 9:3-4

Reflection

How can a person be justified before God? After hearing from his friend Bildad that God rewards the righteous but judges sinners, Job examines his own life and wonders how anyone could stand against God’s perfect judgment. While Bildad accuses Job for being unrighteous, Scripture tell us that Job was indeed a righteous man, blameless in the eyes of people. But even in living a righteous life, Job still is unsure of how he looks in the eyes of God. He wonders how he can be sure of his righteousness in the sight of a God who is wise and all-powerful.

The most righteous person on earth could not be assured of their righteousness before God by their own merits. While enduring his trials, even righteous Job is unsure of how God views him. If we cannot be sure of our own righteousness, we need another way to be sure of our righteousness in the eyes of God. We need to know how we can be deemed righteous and not unrighteous, deserving of eternity and not of death in the eyes of God, the Perfect Judge. How wonderful is our assurance, then, that God through Jesus has done a miraculous work of justification for us! He has taken away the sting of death through His Son, and has replaced it with the assurance of His own righteousness which no one can refute. While we cannot ever be confident in our own merits, God has performed a great wonder for us. We do not have to question our own righteousness in the eyes of God, but can be assured in claiming His righteousness which justifies us.

Prayer

Lord God, You are marvelous in the works You do. You are wise and all-powerful, my Perfect, Righteous Judge. Thank You for the assurance of righteousness through Your Son. Thank You for the work You have done through Jesus. I seek His righteousness today, Lord. Lead me in Your ways that I would not trust in my works, but in what You can do through me. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN.
