Today’s Reading: Deuteronomy 8:1-5

He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then He gave you manna to eat, which you and your fathers had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 8:3

Reflection

We need the word of the LORD much more than bread to live. By God’s Word we are sustained and preserved. By all that He speaks do we live. When the Israelites are about to enter into the Promised Land, Moses reminds the people of how important it is to remember their need for God, and how God has taught the people to trust in Him. God humbles the people by allowing them to go hungry, to see their need and inability to provide for themselves. Then He feeds them, shows the people that they can depend on and trust in Him. God’s desire is not to have the people completely comfortable with regard to their physical needs, but rather to be convinced of the God of Heaven and Earth.

Through His lesson for Israel, God reveals that the teachings He has for us are far more important than the earthly comforts He can provide. Our trust in Him is far more precious than the material blessings He gives to us so freely. While bread only sustains our physical bodies, the Word of God keeps us through eternity. His instructions guide and lead us, His judgments warn and protect us, and His promises benefit us when live our lives by trusting in them as He has declared. Be humbled, God’s people, by your need for the LORD. He and all He declares is all we need. While we feast on the daily bread given by His generous Hand, even more so should we feed on His Holy Word.

Prayer

Everlasting Father, You are all I need. You are the one true Source of life everlasting. You sustain me and shelter me in Your promises. You prove Your Faithfulness which has been declared throughout the ages. Thank You for all that You have done for me. Thank You for seeing my great need not only for daily bread, but more importantly for life eternal. I cannot provide for myself. I am in need of you every moment, Lord. Please help me to trust in all that You give. Please remind me daily that Your Will is always what is best for me. I pray these things in thankfulness to You in Jesus’ Name, AMEN.
