Today’s Reading: John 6:48-59
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”
John 6:51
Reflection: Jesus is the Bread of Life. Just as bread or food is needed for physical life, Jesus is needed for spiritual life. When Jesus refers to Himself as the Bread of Life, He shows us our absolute need for Him in order to live into eternity.
Bread nourishes us, but only if we eat it. We need to receive it fully in order to be nourished by it. Likewise, in order to be nourished by our Savior, we must receive Him fully, allowing His Saving Work to bring us life and grow our faith. We must seek to be nourished by Him, and accept the feast which He has given to us. For Jesus has sacrificed Himself to prepare the finest feast. By His life, death, and resurrection, He has given us all we need to be assured of eternity with Him.
When we take in the things of the world instead of our Lord and Savior, we become starved for proper spiritual nourishment. We may find our fill in the junk that does not feed us properly and become spiritually deteriorated. Jesus had come for this very reason, that by His own Body and Blood we would have life everlasting. He has given up all of Himself that we would be nourished fully for eternity, and be preserved for life with Him. What an amazing blessing from Jesus, to not only know where to find the most nourishing banquet, but to also be invited to partake in it. Praise the Lord!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the Bread of Life. There is no other way to be sustained into eternity but by the Sacrifice You gave of Your Body and Blood. Thank You for nourishing me and for granting me Your Salvation. I pray that You keep me growing in faith in You. I long to spend eternity with You, Lord. In Your Precious Name I pray, AMEN.
