Today’s Reading: Psalm 36
Your righteousness is like the highest mountain; Your judgments, like the deepest sea. Lord, You preserve man and beast.
Meditation: What is the difference between the righteous person and the unrighteous person? The answer is: the Lord, God. The psalmist describes God’s faithful love as higher than the heavens, and His righteousness like the uncharted depths of the ocean. God’s great love is what sustains all of creation. God Himself is the source of life. When we allow Him to nourish us, He does so generously, quenching our thirst by Living Waters of His Holy Spirit and filling us with good things from His abundant storehouse of blessing. No darkness can overwhelm His Word, which remains a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. There is nothing like the love of God.
Sometimes we can be quick to scoff at those we label as wicked. They think too highly of themselves and judge everything and everyone by their own standards. They are deceitful and malicious. They reject the direction of God for their own paths. They are sinful. But isn’t this us? Hasn’t this been us, too, without the grace we’ve freely received from our Loving God?
This is why we need Him so. We fall without God. We fail without God. Without Him, we are thrown down by the things of this world and are left defenseless. We are not righteous because of what we do, but because of what God has done for us through Jesus on the Cross. We are all sinners saved only by the grace of God. Thank God for setting us on the path of good, for reaching us with His faithful love and preserving us, and for giving us life everlasting! Where would we be without God?
Prayer: Loving God, thank You for preserving me. Thank You for sustaining me. Thank You for saving me by the work of Your Son. Help me to see others as You see me: a sinful person who is loved by You. Show me how to reflect Your love to all those around me. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN.
