The Wisdom of God

The Message of the Cross is considered foolishness to those who do not believe. This is because the idea of salvation through an instrument of death cannot be reasoned by a philosopher or debated with human understanding. It cannot be known by scholars of any age because it doesn’t make sense by human knowledge. Through the Cross, God turns all human knowledge and wisdom upside down. He destroys it by working in a way that does not fit within its confines. The fact that Jesus would be executed by capital punishment on an instrument designed for death in order to save humanity does not make sense. But it is true. God saves those who choose to believe in this Message. On the other hand, those seeking to fit the Cross into human wisdom or evidence that makes sense to them are perishing.

God’s Wisdom is different from human wisdom. It is greater, high above what we can fully comprehend. During the time that Paul wrote this letter to the Church in Corinth, he was exposed to Greek culture, which revered knowledge and wisdom, philosophy, and reason. Paul refuted the significance of all of these things against the Truth of the Gospel. He is shared that the Message of the Cross does not depend on being understood to be powerful. After all, he says, the very idea of Christ crucified can be a stumbling block. The very idea of Christ – the Messiah or Savior – being crucified or executed is in itself an oxymoron. God’s Message cannot be reasoned. It simply must be believed.

God gave Salvation through Jesus, our Crucified Messiah. He gave us a great gift that we didn’t expect and cannot fully explain. In order to accept this Truth of the Gospel, we must depend on what human understanding deems foolish. In order to believe in Jesus, we must be willing to trust in the Wisdom of God.
